Tragedy Strikes Ahmedabad: Air India Flight AI171 Crashes Shortly After Takeoff 


                                                                                                


In a devastating incident on June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed minutes after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The aircraft was en route to London Gatwick, carrying 242 individuals, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian. Tragically, all passengers and crew members aboard perished, along with at least five individuals on the ground. ​ 

Crash Details and Immediate Impact

The aircraft took off at approximately 1:38 PM IST and issued a mayday call shortly after, reporting a loss of control. Eyewitnesses from the Meghani Nagar area reported hearing multiple explosions and witnessing thick plumes of smoke as the plane collided with a multi-story building at B.J. Medical College. The crash occurred during the lunch hour, tragically affecting medical students residing in the hostel. Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities recovering bodies from both the crash site and the building struck by the aircraft.

Investigation and Official Responses

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Air India have initiated investigations into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that the aircraft was fully fueled for its long-haul journey, contributing to the intensity of the fire. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India is leading the inquiry, with support from Boeing and GE Aerospace.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating, "The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words." UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also extended condolences, calling the crash "devastating." Both nations have pledged support to the affected families and are coordinating relief efforts

The aviation community is in shock, as this marks the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since its introduction in 2011. Experts are examining various factors, including potential bird strikes and mechanical failure, as possible causes of the crash.
